Fireproof Evacuation Centre |
After explaining the advantages and disadvantages of zinc and copper roofing and coming up with the bushfire scenario in Australia, I came up with the concept of fireproof homes and safety shelters. However, before this concept, I did not know that fireproof homes already existed and decided to carry out a little more research. I discovered that for fire prone areas in Australia it was a standard regulation to have specific materials for the exterior, roofing and even to have standard and non- complex roofs in some areas. (Schneider, R., 2011)
From thenceforth, my concept had changed and I decided to focus on the safety shelter aspect of it instead, as there are evacuation centres in Australia especially for cyclones, but there doesn't seem to be a purpose built evacuation centre for fires or any sort of shelter that comes with the home. I was partly inspired by the first episode of Kevin McCloud's Escape to the Wild on Channel 4. Living on a remote island in the Kingdom of Tonga, South Pacific, with a British family, McCloud experienced how it was to live off 'the fatter of the land' (Of Mice & Men). One thing I learned from this episode was the importance of safety shelters and taking precautions when it comes to living in such a rural area, as there are very few people, mechanisms and technologies to rely on when disaster strikes and all else fails.
